DEEMAK DETECTED #01 — GYANESH KUMAR
Chief Election Commissioner of India | Under public scrutiny over electoral-roll revisions & EC functioning

Gyanesh Kumar, the 26th Chief Election Commissioner of India, took charge in February 2025.
He has become a central figure in the controversy surrounding the Election Commission's Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls.

According to a September 2026 investigation by The Indian Express, Election Commissioners Sukhbir Singh Sandhu and Vivek Joshi reportedly recorded objections at least 14 times over ten months concerning decisions relating to voter registration, deletion of names and handling of electoral-roll data. The report has raised questions about the internal functioning and decision-making of the Commission under CEC Gyanesh Kumar.
The controversy is particularly significant because SIR has involved large-scale verification and deletion of electoral-roll entries. The Supreme Court's proceedings have also examined aspects of the exercise, including the treatment of voters classified under categories such as “logical discrepancies.” In its May 2026 judgment concerning Bihar's SIR, however, the Supreme Court ultimately upheld the legality of that exercise, while noting and addressing procedural safeguards.

Opposition parties have accused Gyanesh Kumar and the EC of facilitating “vote theft” and have demanded action against him. Those are political allegations, not judicial findings. The Election Commission has rejected such allegations as baseless, while the Commission has maintained that differences of opinion during institutional deliberations are normal and that its orders were ultimately unanimous.

Why “Deemak"?

Deemak Tantra's charge is not that Gyanesh Kumar has been judicially found guilty of electoral wrongdoing. The satire is directed at what the movement sees as the erosion of democratic institutions from within.

“A termite is not what is visible on the wall—a termite is what hollows out the foundation from within.”
